William Kentridge on the snow...

09/05/23 - Every winter season the small ski center Gstaad in Switzerland invites an artist to exhibit their work in the middle of the snow. As the pieces are exposed to the weather, the materials are required to have certain characteristics so that neither the low temperatures nor the snowfall can affect them. In the last season, South African born artist William Kentridge presented two monumental works with the title Solo Singer.

Her, by William Kentridge (2022)

Cape Silver, by William Kentridge (2018)

The sculptures dialogue with each other in the middle of a white landscape and, according to the sign, it is the first time that the artist presents his artworks outdoors in Switzerland. Despite the rigidity of the material, it is possible to notice some movement in Her, as if moving forward over Cape Silver. In the latter Kentridge uses the figure of a coffee pot with a certain anthropomorphic aspect.

The expression in both pieces is evident: it seems that they are conversing with each other, making room for themselves in the space that surrounds them.
