Ai Weiwei & Damien Hirst...

06/05/24 - In one of the rooms of the Voorlinden Museum in the Netherlands, two artists share space: one of them is the Chinese artivist Ai Weiwei (1957) and the other, one of the members of the YBA group (recognized for their “shock tactics”), Damien Hirst (UK, 1965).

Fairytale-1001 Chairs, by Ai Weiwei (2007)

Hidden Secret Blossom, by Damien Hirst (2019)

Ai Weiwei's 23 chairs are part of the installation that he presented at Documenta Kassel in 2007 and where the artist invited 1,001 Chinese citizens to the German city as representatives of their community. Most of the people who occupied the chairs, belonging to the Qing dynasty (1611-1911), had never left China. For the artist it was an opportunity for these people to understand the need to make a social change in their country of origin. Once Documenta was over, the chairs were scattered in different places around the world.

Hirst's energy overflows the canvas in Hidden Secret Blossom: white and pink dots on chocolate-colored branches occupy three panels in a celebration of spring. Hirst uses the color of the Impressionists but in an organized chaos like that of Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), together with the delicate charm of pointillism.

The two works, stars of the permanent collection, share equal space and admiration.
