The Haas Brothers vs Hannah Levy...

22/10/19 - The title of this post does not seek a competition between these artists. Our aim is simply to present their works to see the differences or similarities that made them both be chosen by their galleries (Marianne Boesky Gallery and Casey Kaplan Gallery) to be presented at Frieze in London.

The first ones (Nikolai and Simon Haas, USA) work their pieces in ceramics through a technique of their own, with a use of color and brightness that enhances their artistic innovation. We are told at the Fair that the tiny tentacles of the pieces are made with a brush soaked in porcelain that the artists meticulously drag on the surface of a ceramic container. The result is a mysterious creature. We can't tell whether it's a vegetable, an alien or a colorful and fantastic underwater animal.

The second (Hannah Levy) employs silicone and latex as if they were fabrics. She uses them to surround nickel-plated structures with bird-like claws for limbs. The shapes suggest movement, but they look like dressed daily objects. Because of its adhesive quality, silicone tends to attract what surrounds it, leaving a trace on the surface. The shapes seem to defy gravity and, with their silicone clothings, we feel a bit uncomfortable.

In both cases, however, the pieces are humorous and look rather decorative, what makes them easy to our daily life. Reasons enough to offer them to collectors but also to curious first-time visitors to the art fair.
