Baselitz's anthology in Venice...

05/08/19 - The Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice presents for the first time this year, as a side event to the Biennial, a living artist. The chosen one is Georg Baselitz (Germany, 1938) and thanks to his many drawings, paintings, sketches and sculptures, we get to appreciate 60 years of his career.
The montage had to consider the characteristics of the venue, so the artworks are not displayed to their best. The building is old and the light is not becoming for the exhibition. The curatorship pretended to prove the influence Italy had on the German master (since he lived in Florence in the 60s), but unfortunately there is no such connection, but instead a series of artworks organized chronologically. In spite of all this, the dramatic paintings of his sickly individuals perfectly describe the postwar man the artist so skillfully portrayed and that he still repeats in his more recent works.
Arrival, by Georg Baselitz (2018)
The first “turn around” figure in Baselitz appeared in 1969 (according to the sign in the gallery) and since then he defined a new relationship between observer and subject, breaking with all kinds of norms.
The letter from the front - The Negative, by Georg Baselitz (2012)
Ancestors for wife Elke's birthday, by Georg Baselitz (2012)
In his portraits he depicts his wife, friends and himself with the same strange colors and shadows. As Antonio Canova explained: better black than white. The line is sometimes lost and the figure becomes abstract.
Portrait of a painter, by Georg Baselitz (1970-71)
Portrait of Thordis Moller, by Georg Baselitz (1970)
The failing montage could not overshadow the particular skill of the artist to portray in a canvas the trascendental aspects of life with his ethereal and fragile figures.
