Assemblage...

10:49 p.m.

The accumulation of many similar objects suggests much more than a single object. Whether selected or separated, the chosen object has a meaning different from that of its own nature and, together with others, it becomes the message that the artist intends. The assembly or assemblage is actually a three-dimensional collage, which represents an aspect of human behavior since the primitive man: accumulation.

Peregrinaciones de Georges Hugnet, by Óscar Dominguez (1935)
Materials: wooden horse, iron bicycle, oil painting, rubber

In Peregrinations by Georges Hugnet, currently on display in the Surrealist room of the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, Óscar Dominguez (Spain, 1906-France 1957) brings together a wooden horse with a small toy bicycle. Outside of any aesthetic concern or logical control, as Surrealism intended, the two objects fortuitously intertwined refer us to a visual experience where humor and the irrational go hand in hand.
