10/02/22 - One of the current leaders in portraiture is Catalan artist Jaume Plensa (1955), as confirmed by the latest articles written regarding his work. The emphasis, the humanity that emerges from the forms, the inner world that the faces seem to reflect and the beauty, not only of the forms but of the material used, place him at the head of this particular representation that he chose to particularly express himself.
In the Nest series, all the faces have their eyes closed, symbolizing the contemplative or dreamy state of the model. The figure emerges from alabaster, the stone selected by the artist for some of the pieces he exhibited at Galerie Lelong & Co. in New York last December.

This series is joined by other sculptures in stainless steel and bronze, a material the artist chooses frequently. in this case the scale is different and the faces are monumental.

We also want to mention a unique statue in marble, entitled Maria Whispering (2021), which is interesting since the material was divided in separated layers.

In all of them we see the beauty of the simplicity of the shapes, or, as the artist himself defined his work at the opening of one of his works by the Hudson River in New York, “Beauty is a weapon loaded with future”.
