Visiting Vivian Maier...
9:08 p.m.
24/06/20 - FOLA, the Fototeca Latinoamericana, a space dedicated exclusively to photography, is presenting since March an exhibition dedicated to American photographer Vivian Maier (USA, 1926-2009), from whom we've visited several exhibitions before. Maier worked for more than 40 years as a nanny and portrayed like no other the urban scenes of Chicago and New York and its people in a very unconventional way.
Three characteristics distinguish this exhibition, entitled "Vivian Maier, Color Work". The first one is that the pictures on display are in color (in previous opportunities the photos were black and white). The second is that this visit to FOLA is virtual but, thanks to FOLA's call to the lovers of face-to-face visits, and this is the third characteristic, we were able to actually "be there" in the middle of the lockdown thanks to a gigantography.

As for the photos on display, they belong to the last years of Maier's life and are part of a group of more than 40.000 Kodak Ektachrome slides. The shots show her good “eye” for composition and her skill to capture textures and the harmony of colors. However, they are not wanting in picturesque details, that opportunism that makes her such a particular artist.

Spontaneous, empathetic with the subject and mysterious, Vivian left a legacy of more than 100,000 negatives, where she proves her talent at capturing particular aspects of human behavior, unexpected moments, strange gestures... in fact all what our lives are made of.
