Contemporary Antiquity...

Daniel Arsham (USA, 1988) went down many roads during his artistic career: he participated in choreographies and in the aesthetics of sport labels. A few months ago he was granted access to the sculptures of the RMN (Réunion des Musées Nationaux - Grand Palais) in Paris. With them as starting point, his studio began working with friezes, busts and sculptures of Classic Antiquity, but imprinting in them a personal mark: the pieces were eroded and given incrustations imitating the processes of crystallization. So as soon as we enter the Perrotin Gallery in Paris, where Arsham is presenting the exhibition Paris, 3020, we are trapped by the artworks, because our memory recognizes them as familiar. But, at the same time, we understand the transformation they’ve been through, becoming a new object, in which past and present colapse.
