The polished surfaces of Anish Kapoor...

12:00 a.m.

The unmistakable manipulation of the space is the strong point that defines the works Anish Kapoor is currently exhibiting at Lisson Gallery, in New York. All the sculptures are made of polished steel, an extremely surgical material that reflects our image with a realism we had never seen before. The monumentality and shinning surfaces come together in an object that present a certain unbalance or imaginary oscillation that bothers us.

Newborn, by Anish Kapoor (2019)
Material: stainless steel / Measures: 300 x 300 cm
Some time ago Kapoor confessed that during his childhood he lived surrounded by women (his mother, his aunts, etc.) and that they had a major influence in his work. This confession lingered in us and it's probably why we see a certain femininity in the shapes he delivers. Although in this exhibition the focus is placed on infinity and in the Möbius stip: the interlinked curves of Tsunami seem to flow, transcending the edges of the volume. The area below the object becomes a negative space (an empty space) and, simultaneously, dominates the ground in which it is exhibited, but still dissolves in it.

Tsunami, by Anish Kapoor (2018)
Material: stainless steel / Measures: 365 x 340 x 410 cm
The exhibition is playful, seeks a coming and going, wants us to come close and move away of the sculptures, and to see each other reflected in the most ridiculous ways, because of its concave and convex curves. From terror to beauty, everything can be seen in Kapoor's magic spheres.
