Reverse Curve, by Richard Serra (2005/2019)
Material: waterproof steel
Gagosian Gallery
The exhibition space of the Gagosian Gallery, on 21st in New York, presented only one artwork: an overwhelming steel piece that worked as a bisector for the entire room. We were definitely facing an artwork by Richard Serra (USA, 1938), who, in curved harmony, took over all the exhibition space. Reverse Curve is a project that began in 2005 and was finally concluded in 2019. The sculpture measures 30 mts long and 4 mts high, with a weight of several tons. The steel plaque curves itself in a way that results in an inexplicable imbalance (Will it fall?). Serra's experience with these monumental pieces is vast, however each time he presents one, our senses are distorted and once again he proves his enormous ability to keep these "things" in perfect equilibrium. It is precisely the psychological effect of their weight, the imbalance, the rotation, the movement and the shape that never cease to amaze us in all of Serra's works.
