06/07/18 - “Le bal de l’Opéra”, by Henri Gervex (France, 1852- 1929) was acquired by the Musée d’Orsay to become part of its permanent collection of French artists of the 19th century.

The artwork presents a main scene taking place in a balcony, between two men and a masked woman. The dynamism is enhanced by a walking couple in the lower part of the painting, which gives also equilibrium to the entire work. The rhythm is achieved by the exchange of looks between the woman in white and the two men. This all takes place at the Salle de l’Opéra, later known as Ópera Garnier, where big assemblies were organized, specially during Carnival season. The masked woman is a mystery to the men around her. Who is she? Is she alone? Those are the same questions we ask ourselves.
