Red Carpet fashion...

Academy awards weekend. Time of movies, but, above all, of Red Carpet, of stunning dresses and impressive jewels...
There was a time, however, when using that kind of dresses was an everyday matter. In fact, in 1851, Argentine artist Prilidiano Pueyrredón (1823-1870) portrayed Manuelita de Rosas with a very red carpet look... Pure 19th century glamour.

Retrato de Manuelita Rosas, by Prilidiano Pueyrredón.
Technique: oil on canvas / Measures: 199 x 166 cm
A shoulder-less dress to show the jewels and give more light to the face of the young girl.
Manuelita's father, Juan Manuel de Rosas, stated red as the chosen color for Federal ladies.  However it did not look so good in painting. To dim the color, the artist painted white lace details in the skirt and the sleeves, plus white fabric shoes.
Although it's a portrait of Manuelita, Tatita is also present: the girl places her hand on a letter she wrote to her father and is till on her desk.

See every detail: at Google Art Project's digitalisation of the painting.

And to feel a bit like Manuelita, but in a 2013 version, what about this Valentino Haute Couture 2013 Spring-Summer dress? Just in case you get an invitation to the Academy Awards...
