The bronze tree...

17/09/24 - The entrance square to the Pinault Collection at the Bourse de Commerce in Paris showcases one of the typical works of Giuseppe Penone (Italy, 1947): the bronze tree that holds river stones between its branches.

Idee di pietra-1532kg di luce, by Giuseppe Penone (2010)
Materials: bronze, river stones

Behind the sculpture there is the artist's intention to simulate our experience in life with the shapes of this tree. The branches emerge, like ideas, from a base that is related to our experiences and memories. The rocks refer to blockages in the wave of thoughts that give rise to renewed ideas. So, just as river rocks are sculpted by the passage of water, ideas are molded in the torrent of our thoughts.
Penone, in this way, makes poetically visible the similarity between human thought and the growth of a tree.
The whole installation may seem fragile when we get closer. The stones are of considerable size in relation to the branches that support them, although these branches are made of bronze. There are no restrictions on approaching or touching it, only climbing on the sculpture is prohibited
