In commemoration of the centenary of the birth of the American photographer  Richard Avedon (1923-2004), the Gagosian gallery in Paris exhibits a series of his most emblematic photos of celebrities.
The exhibition, called Iconic Avedon: A Centennial Celebration of Richard Avedon, explores the images of the artists, performers, writers and entertainment figures who defined the 20th Century, many of them boosted in popularity thanks to this “icon maker”, as defined by the curatorship of the exhibition. This was Avedon’s skill: to make us know first-hand these characters who today are part of the history of humanity.
All shots displayed are in black and white, with variations in measurements. Face or torso portraits do not exceed the one meter, but full-body shots reach almost 3 meters.
The person portrayed is shown according to his or her profession or the personality that we believe they had. They are moving or sentimental photos or in extremely rigid or sensual poses. The number of people he photographed is striking: Marcel DuchampFrancis Bacon, Rudolf Nureyev, Marlene Dietrich, Coco Chanel, Alberto Giacometti and many many others.
