Jean-Michel Othoniel & Hernán Bas, side by side...

6:50 p.m.

09/09/21 - A work by a French artist and another by an American were the latest acquisitions by MOCA in North Miami, Florida and, although the works have little in common, they are placed side by side.

The French artist is Jean-Michel Othoniel, of whom we shared other previous exhibitions. In this case, he plays again with colored glass, presenting a sculpture in which the blown material (thanks to the artisans of the island of Murano in Italy) becomes a kind of bag surrounded by a ring, also made of glass. The shape is organic and the pieces are quite enigmatic. If we take its title as reference, Le Coeur Reversé (something like The Inverted Heart), we can assume that the bag represents the circulatory organ and the red ring the aorta vein, all very poetically. But it would only be an assumption since there are no other hints by the artist. Its color is extremely attractive: in gold and red, our sight cannot ignore the small sculpture.

Material: blown Murano glass

The work by Hernán Bas is a surrealist painting, in which we see a young man surrounded by ghosts in a forest with a full moon. Although this description is somewhat dark, the work is certainly not, but invites the introspection and observation of the details. As a result, the scene exudes melancholy and the ghosts can reflect a psychological apparition. Bas is living one of the best moments of his career and recognition outside the United States is earning him excellent rewards, especially in the Art market and by collectors interested in Contemporary Art, among them Estrellita Brodsky (patron of Latin American artists), who was one of the last to incorporate him into her extensive collection.
