Inverted staircase...

As expected, Leandro Erlich (Argentina, 1973) once again plays with our senses with Escalera Horizontal, exhibited at the Fundación Santander in San Telmo. It is located in a glass fish tank, just like those objects that can only be admired from afar and with which the viewer cannot get involved. Thus, we can only contemplate this mass of metal, an ambitious site specific almost 20 meters long, which simply lies on the floor. In this hypnotizing observation, since the staircase slowly rotates on its axis, we do not stop thinking about how funny it is to face this everyday object, in such highly absurd arrangement: a staircase that does not serve to ascend or descend, which only leads us to our innermost reflections (where do we wish to go by constantly going up and down?).

Erlich produced other staircases but this is the first to which he incorporates movement, which, due to its dimensions, becomes his most ambitious kinetic piece. As is customary in the works of this artist, the craftsmanship is impeccable.
