Thomas Schütte at Monnaie de Paris...

16/09/19 - With his excessive use of material and his large-scale artworks, this unclassifiable German artist, born in 1954, is one of the main exponents of contemporary sculpture. However it's easy to find certain classic features in his powerful representations, specially those related to conceptualism.
The Monnaie de Paris presented a retrospective dedicated to Schütte, with monumental human figures and bizarre animals, all of them displaying a certain distortion. The exhibition occupied the entrance and several rooms of this 18th century Palace.

The artwork Third Animal is an imaginary beast serving as a water fountain that can feel both terrifying and funny (almost like a cartoon character). However, to the human figures, the artist applied surreal distortions. This usual way of his to represent our society seeks to question different aspects through "almost traditional" sculptures. United Enemies shows us that two opponents can come together in an unconventional way: for Schütte you just need a rope to tie them together.
The exhibition presents many artworks, but the most attractive ones are the giant sculptures displayed in the inner courtyards of the building. Their heights overwhelm the visitors and the sense of touch becomes relevant since, for once, we are allowed to touch them.
