Classic paintings by Adolph Gottlieb...

30/04/19 - As the leader of the Abstract movement in New York, Adolph Gottlieb (USA, 1903-1974) has artworks in every Modern Art Museum in the US. Visiting an exhibition displaying his latest paintings is a way to confirm that most of his works are representations of imaginary landscapes. It's a true challenge, considering they were all made in the 50s. His genius consisted in going for the maximum abstraction, with horizontal representations of earth and sky as separated portions in complete balance.

The Crest, by Adolph Gottlieb (1959)
"Descending Arrow", of 1956, is a canvas of pinks and reds in which we see a geometric figure in the upper part and an arrow below. Having the landscape as a starting point, Gottlieb displays here feelings related to spiritual and transformative processes. This could also be found in his artworks from the 40s, all of them crowded with imaginative inventions from his subconscious.

The exhibition "Adolph Gottlieb: Classic Paintings" is taking place at the Pace Gallery in Chelsea, New York.
