05/17/18 - "West", an artwork by Cuban artist Carmen Herrera, belongs to MALBA's permanent collection and it's currently taking part of the exhibition "Verboamérica". It presents two triangles that meet in perfect symmetry against a dark blue background. "West" is a clear example of what can be defined as Geometric Abstraction. Herrera thus explains her work method: “After a long process of purification, I got rid of what was not essential.”
The artwork entered the collection in 2017 thanks to a donation and it's located in the room dedicated to abstraction, together with Loló Soldevilla, a fellow Cuban artist. Carmen Herrera was born in Cuba in 1915 but from the 30s she lived between New York and París. Last year the Whitney Museum dedicated her a retrospective, a late tribute to an artist with seven decades of career. She sold her first artwork at age 89 and now her pieces reach as much as one million dollars.
