Catharsis and play...

12:00 a.m.

23/04/18 - Marcos López (Santa Fe, 1958), the renown photographer of suburban landscapes and its people, set aside the camera to explore new roads. Without forgetting his essence, he based the investigation for this new project in popular imagery. The result can be seen at the exhibition "In-Continente" at Galería Rolf, in Buenos Aires.
At first sight we feel that Marcos López has been enjoying himself, gathering saints and sticking und objects to the wall as a reference to absurdity and incoherence. "I know I am a good photographer, anow I want to prove that I can be a good artist”, he explains. That's why we will mention here his objects, rather than his photographs (which of course are part of this carnival of images). López in interested in Latin America's crossbreeding which resulted in a book shelf turned into an altar. The piece is covered with saints and other relevant personalities, such as Tango singer Tita Merello or the leaders of Venezula's Corte Malandra, next to the images of the Sacred Heart and Eva Duarte. Below we see the Difunta Correa and on top a devil's mask. Although the artist explains that this is only a reference to religious and pagan myths, the mixture is picturesque and also quite risqué.

In "Virgen" he used the skirt of a saint he bought in Cuba to dress another shelf that holds an image with different objects, such as candles and flowers, both symbols of veneration.

The exhibition is a total excess of colors and images,  din accordance to López Neo-Baroque style. “I am having a catharsis after many years of religious education at school and a very faithful mother”, he says.
