La Oración, by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida
Technique: watercolor on paper / Measures: 59 x 36 cm
Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) was a Spanish artist that went through various artistic stages, demonstrating skills and talent in them all.
By the end of the 19th century there's a revaluation of the Gothic period in Europe, with mystical images and undefined religious iconography, with a tendency towards describing the atmosphere rather than transmitting faith. Sorolla chose this path in the painting La Oración: a young girl, kneeled in prayer. It was painted with utmost care in detailing her clothes and the floors of the church.
However, by the beginning of the 20th century, Sorolla transformed himself into an artist concerned about social issues, specially the perils of sea life. In En la costa de valencia, with a composition slightly balanced to the right, Sorolla defies the Academy and steps into modernity.

The  temporary exhibition, now opened in one of the rooms of the MNBA, showcases works belonging to the museum's permanent collection. Why is it worth seeing the paintings by this Spanish artist? Because, through them, we can recognise the artistic evolution towards modernity in Spain, not in the subjects depicted, but in the aesthetic values.
