Nativity...

With Christmas Eve almost here, let's see a painting that depicts the moment of Jesus' birth
Nativity, by Jacopo Robusti (a.k.a. Tintoretto) 1585/1594
Technique: oil on wood / Measures: 54 x 40cm - MNBA
For this work, Tintoretto (Venecia, 1518-1594) approached the unofficial gospels, because the brith of Jesus is briefly told only on Saint Lucas' Gospel. The Virgin is lying over the hay, in a manger in Bethlehem, where the labour took her by surprise. Saint Joseph, a senior man, brings light to the scene with just a candle. On the right, two women observe the child. The scene is completed by several animals. Although the most illuminated part of the painting is where the mother and her son are, the artist happened to include a donkey right in the middle of the composition. He might have been influenced by the prophesy of Isaiah: "The bull mat his master and the donkey, the manger of his Lord"(Isaiah 1, 3).
