Escape to Egypt...

11:47 a.m.

In the book of the New Testament it is said that, three days after the birth of Jesus, an angel came to Joseph in his dreams. He warned him that King Herod was after the child so they had to escape to Egypt. Joseph obeys and the family begins the journey.
Flemish artist Joachim Patinir (Belgium, 1475-1524) depicts a rest in the trip...
Rest in the escape to Egypt, by Joachim Patinir
Technique: oil on wood / Measures: 32.5 x 49 cm
The Virgin sits on a rock, with a huge cape, and the Child in her hands. At her feet, the few belongings of the family. Behind them, an unreal landscape which, due to the small measures of the painting, can only be appreciated from a close distance. Some peasants, on the right, in their chores and, on the left, stone buildings, so typical of the Neatherlands. Far away, a woman with raised arms, in desperation, complaints to a soldier who seems to be taking away her child.
Little is known of this artist but it is clear, through his work, that not only did he like including symbols and unreal landscapes, but Patinir also had a wide knowledge of nature, because he depicts it with meticulous details. It is not certain that this painting is really by Patinir (there's few information regarding its origin) but, since nothing says it's not, the MNBA has chosen to keep the traditional authorship.
