Es Devlin...

01/03/23 - Esmeralda Devlin (1971) is a British artist currently exhibiting a superlative site-specific installation at Superblue in Miami. The experience begins with a film about oxygen and the action of breathing, then the screen opens to reveal a maze of mirrors. According to the artist, the transformed space represents a metaphor: it connects us with our narcissism and the need to look in the mirror. Devlin's explanation becomes more complex by relating her work to the biosphere, digitality and symbolic symmetries: the small corridors represent the bronchial channels that gradually join to form a large lung (visible from the upper floor of the installation).

The truth is that while walking through the maze, our sensations vary. At first, the novelty is seeing ourselves reflected hundreds of times in the polished surfaces, but after a few minutes we begin to look for the exit that is hidden among so many mirrors: the claustrophobic overrules everything.

While the room facilitator is busy taking photos of the visitors, we wait for the proper moment to ask him the way out (here we wonder how Borges could have liked mazes so much). The exit is subtly indicated with red flashes.

Forest of Us forces us to think about what will become of us if we continue to pollute the planet, if we continue to deforest. Our active participation in this exhibition makes us aware of the need to replant all the trees that were cut indiscriminately.
