8:43 p.m.03/28/23 - Right at the corner where Via del Quirinale meets Via delle Quattro Fontane stands a small temple commissioned by the Order of Discalced Trinitarians. The façade presents a dynamic energy of ingenious construction, created by Francesco Borromini between 1665 and 1667. The creativity with which this building with concave-convexa-concave curvatures was resolved challenged the guidelines followed until then for the construction of churches.
Let us remember that the eccentric architect, whose real name was Francesco Castelli (Italy, 1599), died in Rome in 1667. Apparently it was an unresolved suicide, but what is known is that at the age of 20 he collaborated in the construction of the altar of the Cathedral of Saint Peter and in the planning of the Barberini Palace. Like all innovators, he was criticized by his contemporaries, particularly by Bernini, which forced Borromini to seek new patronage.
Going back to the church, it is known as San Carlino alle Quattro Fontane because it is located on that street and it bears the name of the saint San Carlos Borromeo, in diminutive due to its small size.
