Pinacoteca de Brera...
8:25 p.m.Lamentation over the Dead Christ, by Andrea Mantegna (1483)
Have you ever seen Christ like this? With this question written on the sign begins the story of this incredible, even irreverent foreshortening, of Mantegna's painting. The text continues explaining the realism that the artist imposed to portray Christ, who lies, as if he were any human being, watched by some old women. We, like unwanted guests, walk through this painting that never left the artist's studio while he was alive. We can understand why: such irreverence could have been harshly punished.
Madonna and Child with Saints, Angels and Federico da Montefeltro (San Bernardino Altarpiece), by Piero della Francesca (1472 – 4)
Measures: 251 × 172 cm
"Supper at Emmaus" is a sublime masterpiece by Caravaggio, probably painted at Colonna, where he fled after having murdered Ranuccio Tomassoni. The one that follows is probably the most photographed piece in the collection: "The Kiss", by Francesco Hayez, a pioneer of Italian Romanticism. It was exhibited for the first time in 1859, during the Second War of Independence, a victory achieved by the newly born Italy with the help of the French army. We are not only attracted to the image of the kiss but also because the clothing reflect the colors of both flags.
These are some of the stars housed in this building which used to be a monastery in the 14th century till it was acquired by Maria Teresa of Austria, who transformed it into an Institute of Art and Library. It was she who began this incredible collection of artworks.
