Venice Biennial: Official US Presentation.

8:00 a.m.

30/05/22 - The winner of the main prize awarded by the Venice Biennial was given to the artist chosen to represent the United States: Simone Leigh, who transformed the façade of the American pavilion, at  Giardini. Its neoclassical entrance was covered with a thatched roof supported by wooden columns, just like an African palace. Inside, a series of bronze and ceramic sculptures, both abstract and naturalistic, occupy the entire space. The project is entitled Sovereignty and in this work Leigh explores the female body of black women, particularly its relationship with fertility. Sovereignty is a term that refers to not submitting to another person or another culture, a subject to which the artist is very close due to her relationship with the African diaspora.

It is the first time that the USA is represented by a black female artist who links both cultures, connecting American history with the individuals of color from Africa who were used as slaves.
