We are water...

19/07/21 - Artists have the ability to make us reflect on subjects or situations with which it is difficult for us to commit ourselves. This time Isabel Muñoz (Spain, 1951) takes us into the oceanic world by immersing herself with her camera in seas and aquatic environments so that we become aware of the generosity of Nature and how we mistreat it.

Somos Agua, by Isabel Muñoz

Installation, Museo Lázaro Galdiano

Somos Agua (we are water) is an installation with several screens showing a video filmed at the aquariums of the Institut Oceanogràfic in Valencia and where we see Japanese diver Ai Futaki submerge with other divers and dance among the sea creatures that inhabit that space.

The lights and shadows in the room increase as the number of spectators increases too. In the same way, the sound goes "in crescendo" towards disturbing tones, contrasting with what is observed on the screens, where the young Japanese woman dances in slow motion, undeterred by what is happening in the room. The counterpoint between what we hear and what happens on the screen is the alert that Isabel Muñoz proposes so that human beings, with their intrusion, stop abusing what Nature has to offer because it may have an expiration date.

This exhibition is currently on display at the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, a stunning house on Serrano street, in Madrid. Mr Galdiano and his white, Argentine-born Paula Florido y Toledo, donated the property and the entire art collection to the State, which allows us to enjoy this venue and other exhibitions just like this one.
