The flag as filmic investigation...

Rolf Gallery in Buenos Aires organized a series of workshops on video-art, where several artists shared their experiences. One of them was Andrés Denegri, who explained that, for more than 20 years, he has been experimenting with the visual arts, particularly blending film, photography, video and digital media. As an example of such interesting mix, he presented a work based in the manipulation and modification of the first film made in Argentina.
Burned flag, by Andrés Denegri (2018)
From the Mechanisms of Oblivion series
Photography / Poliptych of 5 pieces of 110 cm x 35 cm
Obtained through the historical archives, the film is about the birth of a Nation and a country, using several images of Argentina’s flag. Those film frames with the flag are the ones Denegri is mostly interested in. But many of them were burned, something fairly common back then, due to excessive heat during the rotation of the reel. The effect of the burned frame, together with those of the flag, are represented by the artist through photos in which, we instantly associate the symbolism of what we are seeing.
Thanks to Denegri’s experimental approach, the visual and sensory field of the image is expanded.
