The Invisibles of Jaume Plensa...

26/11/18 - The Palacio de Cristal, which belongs to the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, is located at the Parque del Retiro. Its structure of glass and iron makes all the surrounding landscape visible from inside. Today it is currently exhibiting 3 hanging headsmade of wire. The pieces blend with the architecture, so one must pay special attention to see the details of the shapes. Their author, artist Jaume Plensa (España, 1955), gave them the names Anna, Laura and Rui Rui.

Materials: stainless steel and steel / Measures: 170 x 90 x 140 cm each one
Each of the heads has the index finger next to the mouth, as if requesting silence, but on a cloudy day we might need to look twice to grasp the figure completely. This gesture is not meant to make us quiet, but to represent silence as a concept, in a time of utmost noise and no-communication.
The concave and convex shapes are integrated to the space, but at the same time, seem to disappear as the light shifts. The heads catch the light, reflect the rays or are pierced by them.

The figures are anonymous and primitive. Although they have names of their own, they are not defined as characters. Plensa usually works with the human figure, even though Contemporary Art insists on getting rid of it and re-define it.

As we leave the building behind, and even though the Palacio is totally transparent, the monumental faces of Laura, Anna and Rui Rui become invisible.
