Liliana Porter's brief situations...

11:22 a.m.

10/08/18 - A little pink lady, seated in the brink of the white pedestal, next to an enormous transparent fabric, is performing some kind of daunting task. She is part, together with hundreds of small objects scattered all over the platform of "El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves", by Liliana Porter (Argentina, 1941), an installation that belongs to the permanent collection of the PAMM in Miami. If you look closely, you’ll discover many “tiny situations” taking place simultaneously.

Materials: Figurines, objects and wooden base / Variables dimensions

In the abundance of visual elements, the pink lady sits in a privileged location. We see her there, knitting, and if we follow the blue thread, it becomes a skein of dramatic proportions. With this existential metaphor, is the artist seeking a reflection on self-realization? Or maybe it’s just a record of the time consumed in the objects: what the woman knits is several times bigger than her size.
The knitting, used as a material and symbolic factor, simplifies an image that pretends to reflect “the essence of things”, according to  the artist. The real object - the blue thread - poses a tension between what’s being presented and what’s being represented: simulation and reality. In this representation of reality with these abundance of visual elements, the tiny woman performs a human act so impossible as overwhelming.
