Paloma Varga Weisz's hanging man...

07/30/18 - At 1, Davies St, in London, the body of a man hangs from the ceiling. This takes place at Sadie Coles Gallery and the sculpture belongs to Paloma Varga Weiz (Germany, 1966). At first site the artwork looks rather Medieval, probably because of the material used (wood) and unions of the limbs. However the artist found inspiration in a recent photograph of a climber hanging from the Swiss Alps. So this artwork represents the corps of a dead man, which renders the sculpture overwhelming and fills the room with deep sadness.

Man, hanging, by Paloma Varga Weisz (2018)
The exhibition showcases other sculptures made of wood, using traditional techniques. A deer standing on its back looks towards a wall looks quite alive in spite of the material used.

Varga Weisz sculpts the works herself, something quite unusual now since most artists rely on a team of assistants. And if her artworks look medieval and fairly-tale like, the artists is keen to explain that we are mistaken: “I hate the words “mythical”, “fairy tale”, “belonging to a church” because none of my sculptures are so. My inspiration comes from other sources, like newspapers or porn magazines, not from a fairy tale.”
