10/06/16 - Sometimes, within a temporary exhibition, certain artworks stand out because of the relationship they create with the visitors. This is what's happening now on the 7th floor of the CCK, with Gaspar Libedinsky's "Carrousel". The artworks is currently taking part of the exhibition celebrating the 200th anniversary of Argentina's Independence and it was chosen by the curatorship to represent the Future.
Carrousel, by Gaspar Libedinsky (2014)
Materials: connected bicycles / Measures: 500 cm (diameter), 130 cm (height)
The aim of Rodrigo Alonso, curator of Innovation and Future, is to make us think about the future of transit and urban circulation. According to Alonso, if we believe what Science Fiction predicts, in the years to come, cities will be packed with spaceships, flying cars and floating vehicles. Today, transit issues are being solved with a traditional and very popular device: the bicycle.
With Libedinsky's connected bikes, a collective action is set in motion, recreating a children's carrousel. The wooden horses where replaced by bicycles that traction one another with their shared wheels. Thus, while traditional carrousels are moved by a centered motor, Carrousel's moving force is moved to the periphery. The start, speed and stop require consensus. The individual action has become a group action. We are offered a playful experience that requiere the agreement of all those taking part.
The curator suggests that the installation requires our team work to give it strength, stability and sense, just like the Future.
