03/21/16 - A small room. A mirrored ball. In the walls, however, we don't see points of lights, but bullet holes. Jorge Macchi, an internationally renowned Argentine artist, is presenting "Perspectiva" at the MALBA  and he amazes with his metaphors. Back to the mirrored ball, as visitors we hope it moved and reflects its lights on the wall. But it does not move at all, it is stuck, and the room, white as a hospital's ward, has it's walls covered in holes. It's an inversion: instead of sending out light, it's a weapon of destruction.
Hotel, by Jorge Macchi (2007)
Materials: Acrylic paint on wall, lamp / Measures: 400 x 300 x 15 cm
Courtesy of Ruth Benzacar Galería de Arte.
Another inversion is "Hotel", an illuminated wallpaper (although not exactly) with a light that fades out, as if disappearing in the darkness, although the room is very well lit. The motif of the wallpaper blends into the whiteness of the wall.
XVY, by Jorge Macchi
Video-installation
Edition of 6 + AP
The artwork "XYZ2012" is a questioning of time and space. A video in loop projects, right in the corner of the room, a clock. It's hands coincide with the unions between the walls and the floor. It's, in fact, a clock that does not tell the time, but defines a space.
Vidas paralelas, by Jorge Macchi (1998)
Glass - Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection
Finally, an artworks that belongs to Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection, "Vidas paralelas": two broken glasses that pretend to be similar, after being destroyed by the same gun. In spite all efforts, the result will be impossible. This piece reminds us of Felix González Torres' clocks: two clocks are started at the same time, but after a while they no longer match. It's a way of representing those couples that, although similar at first, with time each member will show his/her differences.
Some pieces are hard to decode: understanding Macchi's universe is not easy.  This is an exhibition to visit with a guide.
