Introducing Aidan...

03/10/16 - Aidan Salakhova, an ardent feminist, was born in Russia in 1964. Her works reveal the influence of Russian traditions and those of Western art history.
The Saatchi Gallery in London presented "Revelations", an exhibition of her works where a veiled figure plays a leading role. In these enigmatic works, with traditional and religious symbols, Aidan recreates the female figure, defying the patriarchal heritage of Uzbekistan. She also explores the potential of the veil from an erotic standpoint, as archetype of the dominatrix and her ruling over men.

In more recent works, the artist ditches the veiled woman for the human figure, both male and female. These new pieces, in marble and granite, were made following the traditional techniques of classic sculptures. Although the figures have a certain classic beauty, the relationship between them is far from traditional. In the following example, a model is venerated by a male figure.

Aidan pays no attention to criticism. In a recent interview she said: “I hate texts. I am a visual artist. If I've been interested in texts, I would have been a writer".
