Marx Ernst (Germany, 1891-1976) & Peggy Guggenheim (USA, 1898 1979)
He, a surrealist artist, and her, a patron to artists and an art collector that propelled his career and made him famous in the US. Peggy's museum in Venice houses many of Ernst's works.
Double portrait (Kokoschka and Alma Mahler), by Oskar Kokoschka (1912-13)
Oskar Kokoschka (Austria, 1886-1980) & Alma Mahler (Viena, 1879-1964)
Alma was 30 years old, an artist model and widower to composer Gustav Mahler when she meets Kokoschka. Oskar, totally impressed by her beauty, portraits her by his side. After a tempestuous romance, Alma abandons the house they shared. Kokoschka, wrecked by the loss of her, asks a doll maker to design a real scale one, with Alma's features. But when he sees the result, it looked horrific, like a ghost. However, he kept it as model for his paintings.
Robert Smithson (USA, 1938–1973) & Nancy Holt (USA, 1938-2014)
Both artists of Earth Art: works that wanted to praise Nature while making us aware of the devastation produced by men. Smithson believed that art could mediate between ecology and industry. She supported all his projects and, before dying, created her iconic Sun Tunnels, in Utah's desert. She placed large cylinders that, at noon, when the sun shines, light comes through them, resulting in a mystical image of our star. They were true partners, joined by Land Art. Nancy dedicated her last project to Robert.
Happy Valentine's Day.
