Newport Street Gallery: Damien Hirst's art gallery...

19/10/15 - Much expectation took over the art world in general when Damien Hirst (UK, 1965) announced the opening of his gallery. Hirst, a member of YBA (Young British Artist), dominated British art scene during the 90s. His success was so impressive and his works achieved such status that the artist subsequently became a collector and, later, an art entrepreneur. That explains, in a way, why the announcement of his gallery caused such expectation but, mainly, it was the chance to see a new work of his, something colossal, fit for a grand opening. But it was not so. The Newport Street Gallery is located on an industrial neighbourhood in south London and it displays Damien Hirst's works, not of his making, but those belonging to his collection. Nowadays, in fact, the gallery is presenting an exhibition entitled "Power Stations", dedicated to works from 1964 to 1982 by artist John Hoyland.

Hoyland was a British artist (1934-2011) with an interest for abstraction. His works can be recognised for his particular use of color, line and space.

Abstraction was considered revolutionary in the 20th Century, removed from the feelings of the artist, and subject to the perception of the viewer. A visual painting. However, Hoyland made a few changes in his works to avoid that strict logic of Abstract painting, specially geometric one.

The detail in the previous painting shows a not-so-precise border between colors. It seems like it's an incomplete movement of the artist.  The same can be seen in the use of colours: Hoyland works them intuitively, according to his state of mind.

In the 80s, Hoyland uses a larger color palette and emphasises the strength of his brush-strokes. He even includes finger marks and different tools. The result is a thick and textured patchwork.

In spite of not making figurative painting, Holyand wasn't happy with his treatment as an abstract artist because it had nothing to do with his work method, nor the feeling included in them.
Visitors to the exhibition, then, are faced with mixed sensations: at first glance, Hoyland's art seems formal and lacking emotion. But with a more direct observation, we witness the feelings and thoughts the artist had when creating the painting.
Damien Hirst under a new light, that of gallery director of his own collection. But who doesn't miss the artist?
