Photo 2014 in Buenos Aires... (I)

10:27 a.m.

Many photo exhibitions will be opening in Buenos Aires soon... Let's start with Marcos Zimmermann's retrospective at the Sala Cronopios of the Centro Cultural Recoleta.
Alrededores de la Base Marambio, by Marcos Zimmermann (2001) - Detail
Technique: panoramic photography / Measures: 75 x 200 cm
The exhibition starts with the photos Zimmermann(Buenos Aires, 1950) has been taking in the past 40 years: landscapes of the country and the sea, documents of the many regions of Argentina. Nature is reflected in many works in the exhibit, but it can be appreciated at large in the panoramas. Zimmermann's eye sees what we see, but form a different angle, which allows him to show us known landscapes of Patagonia or the jungle, but in a way we have never seen them before.  As he explains, "I seek the tracks of my homeland with a stubbornness of a hunting dog".

Technique: photography / Measures: 70 x 200 cm
The tour is defined by periods and in the Documentary one (1958-1984), MZ visits, among other cities, Paris. There he is captivated by the public visiting the Musée du Louvre, more than by the paintings themselves.

Technique: photography / Measures: 30 x 40 cm
As we walk through time, we approach the more recent photos and this is where the exhibition gets more intense. As every contemporary artist, he wants to move us and make us see other realities, so different from our daily experiences. However, some photos of flowers pop up, in B&W or color, where innocent beauty meets sensuality.

Technique: B&W photography / Measures: 50 x 40 cm
Without a doubt, Zimmermann is a thoughtful observer, an eye than never rests and scans the city and those who inhabit it. In this he resembles photographer Horacio Coppola and the MNBA has a proof of that.

To visit... Marcos Zimmermann, till March 27th, at the Sala Cronopios of the Centro Cultural Recoleta, with the excellent curatorship of fellow photographer Oscar Pintos.
