Spying on Macció and Gordín...

Telón rápido, by Rómulo Macció (1971)
Technique: acrylic on canvas / Measures: 200 x 280 cm - MNBA
Tiny worlds. Clichéd characters, almost comic. That's what we see in this painting by Rómulo Macció (Argentina, 1931), belonging to a creative phase the artist had around the 70s. The public is invited to see up-close, trying to maybe recognise, among the characters, the heroes of their youth.
A very similar idea, yet in 3D, emerges from the work of Sebastián Gordín (Buenos Aires, 1969): a miniature stage to spy every single detail and let our imagination run wild.
Spoon music in Eldor, by Sebastián Gordín (1994)
Materials: wood, cardboard, stones, aluminium foil, lights
This piece can be seen at the exhibit "Un extraño efecto en el cielo" recently opened at the MAMBA and where the artist shows more than twenty fantasy-packed works. Some of them seek to catch the curiosity of the public, calling for a close-up to discover the unexpected inside a series of boxes. Others, like the Aguanieves, aesthetically perfect, show drops that fall like tears on simple, yet theatrical stages.
Serie Aguanieve, by Sebastián Gordín (2006)
Materials: wood, glass, bronze, liquid vaseline, epoxy resin, water pump.
Finally, a piece that combines the style of the Aguanieve with the childish. As Roberto Jacoby explains: “In the work, the poetic emerges from the mix between the idea of 'the world' and 'a childish look'... A fake universe in which one can still live and enjoy..."
The child, by Sebastián Gordín (1997)
Materials: wood, glass, bronze y acrylic
Evrything in this exhibition invites us to spy, even to see who are the owners of the works exhibited, mostly private collectors...
