Yayoi Kusama...

14/09/23 - Narcissus Garden, Infinity Mirrored Room-Let’s Survive Forever and Where the Lights in My Heart Go are the names of the three immersive installations that Yayoi Kusama presents at the Rubell Museum in Miami. The predominant material is stainless steel, which causes the unlimited reflection of our figure. Therefore, if seeing each other unlimitedly from all possible angles is a nuisance, it is better not to go. But if the intention is to capture the most incredible selfie in one click, this exhibition is a must-see.

Narcissus Garden, by Yayoi Kusama (1966)
Stainless steel

Narcissus Garden is made up of 700 stainless steel spheres that run through the entire entrance to the first gallery of the museum. It kind of looks like a silver river that reaches 70 meters long. The title of the work refers to the exaggerated defect of self-observation, known as narcissism, a concept originated in the mythological character, who, looking at himself enthralled in the reflection of a lagoon, falls and drowns. Legend has it that his death was a punishment from the Gods proportional and symbolic to his defect (Narcissus drowns when he passes through his own ghost). As a corollary, the young man is turned into a shining crown flower for us to contemplate for all eternity.
The same thing happens with this work, if we get so close to the spheres to see ourselves up close and better, we could even collapse on them.
The other two installations are set up inside cubicles where you enter individually for only 2 minutes. One in the dark and the other fully illuminated. Both take us to a new dimension: the work is completed when we enter the room, leaving ourselves alone and isolated. Right there the Yayoi galaxy is expressed in all its immensity.
The sign says that the Rubell Museum is the only institution that managed to bring together the three installations at the same time, thus fulfilling its main objective: sharing the collection with the public of all ages.
