Jeff Koons' sculptures...

7:21 p.m.

The gift of a monumental sculpture to a city quite often produces controversies, as it happened with Pei's pyramid for the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower itself. Jeff Koons' tulips, specially commissioned by the US, was also target to criticism and vandalism. The bouquet was placed in the gardens of Champs Élysées, between the Petit Palais and the Place de la Concorde, on a square a bit removed from visibility. Even though the aim of the sculpture was to pay respect to the victims of the 2015 terrorist attacks and to strengthen the French-American bonds, the mission seemed to have failed. The monument represents a hand holding balloon tulips in different colors, but the hand looks pale, and the tulips unnatural, generating the most unusual comparisons.
The sculpture, however, is here to stay. Made in stainless steel and polychromatic aluminium, it measures 10 mts tall and will forever mark Koons as part of Paris.
