Picasso's sculptures at the MoMA...

30/11/15 - An exhibition of more than 130 pieces by Pablo Picasso is currently open at the MoMA in New York. Entitled "Picasso Sculpture", it is interesting for many reasons. Firstly because Picasso was academically trained in painting but not in sculpture, so this was how he experimented with three dimensions.
Secondly, the exhibition focuses on the materials used and the process of creation.
Third reason: Picasso would not part with this sculptures, keeping them in his residence, as members of his family.
Finally,  they haven't been seen by the public in this part of the world in 50 years.
The exhibition is organized chronologically in ten rooms. Each one is dedicated to the works done during a specific time and as result of Picasso's particular quest.

These 3D works by Picasso are an opportunity to dive in an obscure aspect of his career as an artist. Although, not trained in sculpture, his talent allowed him to break Academy rules through the use of unconventional materials or found objects. It is amazing how these works do not seem to belong to the time they were created, which does not happen with painting. The cubist collages and Blue Period works seem relics of the past century, but the Absynthe glasses look very updated.
The many works on display help us see the changes in Picasso's production, from the bronzes to the final assemblages.
It is a pity that the curators chose to use no signs, which forces visitors to constantly look at the catalogue. Other than this, "Picasso Sculpture" is a historic exhibition.
