Marc Rothko (Russia, 1903 – US, 1970) emigrated from the URSS to the United States and settled with his family in Portland, Oregon. At age 20 he moved to New York and began a career of global recognition. His paintings are usually large-scale color surfaces, mainly abstract structures, almost mystical.

By the end of 1990s, Andra Ursuta emigrates from Rumania to New York to study art. The cultural differences between both countries constantly influence her work. Her installation entitled "Vandal Lust" is made of a medieval catapult apparently used to propel the artist to space. However, her body crashes against a wall and falls to the floor. The motionless body lies dressed in traditional Babushkas' costume, with a knee-length skirt and a red flowered shawl on the head. With irony and black humour, the artist wants to reflect the escape from the URSS and her arrival to the US: she imagined she would find a perfect world, but, through experience, things proved to be not so easy as dreamed...
